In recent weeks, we have been working closely with Open Democracy to address pressing changes in our plans during the COVID-19 outbreak. One of the activities that we were looking forward this year was the Check Global Investigative Camp in July in Tunis for NAWA Newsroom
We have been able to come an alternative for this given the cancellation of all travels. Check Global has cooperated with Open Democracy to provide a six months program of a set of training sessions that will be entirely held online and will start in June. The webinar structured sessions will focus on a variety of topics including podcasting, video editing, ethics of journalism and reporting for 35 journalism students in Yemen, Syria, Tunisia, Egypt and Lebanon. The students will be walked through the necessary steps to produce a diverse journalistic content depending on their thematic interests.
Students will be having the opportunity to apply to participate in a three-month internship program at Open Democracy. Five students will be granted an internship, one from each country. The internship will start at the end of the training program and will allow the participating students to be mentored by and work with Open Dedmocacy producing their investigative pieces, thus gaining an understanding of the newsroom atmosphere as well as practical journalistic skills.
